READING NATURE’S SIGNS: skills for unraveling the language of the natural landscape

Nature is continually communicating with us through an array of sights, sounds, smells, and sensations. How can we become more aware of our surroundings and make sense of what they are telling us about the story of life written on the landscape? These highly interactive workshops will provide some tools to help you begin to explore that question.

This series consists of three 90 minute sessions, once per week over three consecutive weeks.

Themes for each week are:

  • Week 1:  Awareness:  Sensing with an “animal mind” and Seeing with “animal eyes”
  • Week 2:  Becoming Native to your Place: understanding the basic ecology of where you live and your place within it
  • Week 3:  Becoming the Animal:  Seeing the landscape through the mind of an animal

Sessions will be held rain or shine unless there is a threat of a thunderstorm.

Times and Dates:

  • 1:30-3 pm on Wednesdays, October 4, 11, 18 (rain date 25)
  • 10-11:30 am on Thursdays, October 5, 12, 19 (rain date 26)

Materials needed:

  • Each participant should bring a sketch pad or journal and some pencils as these workshops include some brief sketching exercises.

Participants: 

  • Participation in this program requires a willingness to sit still and remain silent for up to 5 minutes for portions of some of the sessions.  Suggested age range: Adults (18 and up)
  • Eight participants max for each session.

  • $25 members;  $35 non-members
