AUGUST ART DAYS

Join us for our Friends of Five Rivers instructed nature art classes in August.

  • Up to 15 adults (18 and older unless a serious high school art student) will be treated to an Environmental Educator describing the area(s) you will be sketching.
  • All levels welcome!
  • Fees – Members – $20; Non-Members – $25
  • $12 additional fee for materials if you cannot provide your own sketchbook and drawing pencils
  • Register for each class choice below.

“Connect to Nature with Sketchbooks & Journaling”  with Carol Coogan

CLASS DESCRIPTION
At every moment, wherever you are, you can use a simple sketchbook to connect more deeply with the natural world. In its pages you might write notes, record observations and descriptions of what you notice, hear, smell, and see, and fill its pages with simple diagrams, scribbles, quick sketches, or fully developed drawings. When curious, jot down the question. You can research later to learn more about it. Join Carol Coogan as she gives instruction, support, advice, and inspiration to your own nature sketching practice.

“Connect to Nature with Pond Landscape Sketch” with Noreen Powell

CLASS DESCRIPTION
Capture the beauty of Five Rivers in a sketch! You will be guided on a five minute walk to one of the Fiver River’s beautiful ponds. There you will be provided instructions by Noreen Powell on sketching landscapes. After this two hour session, you will be able to take home your sketch as well as a procedure for your next art adventure.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Carol Coogan is an illustrator, designer and teaching artist, whose work has been printed in books, newspapers and magazines, and has graced the stationery of Crane & Co. Carol has won numerous statewide New York Press Association awards for her op-ed art published weekly by the Altamont Enterprise. She created the “Backyard Naturalist” feature for Times Union newspaper, which she wrote and illustrated for 10 years, and which began from her own practice of nature sketching at Five Rivers. Her work is on many of the indoor exhibits throughout the Five Rivers Education building. Carol is an experienced and accomplished instructor in the subjects of drawing & painting, keeping sketchbooks and nature journals, and SoulCollage®. She has taught throughout the Capital District at such venues as the Art Center of the Capital Region, Arlene’s Artist Materials, Wildbird Junction, Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center, Hudson Valley Community College Center for Creative Retirement at St. Agnes Cemetery, Sidney Albert Jewish Community Center, Boys & Girls Clubs Afterschool Programs, Pine Hollow Arboretum, Five Rivers Education Center, and has provided many private lessons. She is a recurring teaching artist for the Albany Institute of History & Art’s “Book Arts” program, annually teaching nature journaling and observational drawing to 3rd through 6th grade students in schools, as well as overseeing the museum’s Sketchbook Club, and other programs for adults and children. Carol is especially interested in working with each person at their own individual level and geared towards their own individual interests.

Noreen Powell has always loved art! Originally from Buffalo, she attended Buffalo State College and majored in Graphic Design. After working in the field for fifteen years she choose to stay home to raise her children. In 2002, she moved to Albany and began teaching K-12 Art. In 2011 she obtained her Masters in Education with a concentration in Art from SUNY Albany. She was also a NYS certified teacher. For the past ten years, she has had the joy of teaching adult painting workshops throughout the community including the Art Center of the Capital Region, St. Agnes Cemetery and Albany Institute of History and Art. “Art is my passion. Teaching others is my joy!”.
