TALK AND TREK
Two sessions will be held for adults interested in participating in these annual and interesting Talk and Treks, led by our Director of Educational Programs, Nancy Conway.
POND LIFE: The history and health as told by flora, fauna, and water quality
Nearly every walk here at Five Rivers passes by one of the fourteen beautiful ponds located on the property. Have you ever wondered about the history of these ponds and whether they are healthy or not?
Join a community of adult learners as we discover the answers! Each week, as we walk out to a specific pond, we will discuss its construction, purpose, and age. Then we will investigate its health by sampling the aquatic life and testing the water quality. Participants are asked to dress for the weather, wear sturdy walking shoes that can get muddy, and bring water. Please meet at Five Rivers’ Guided School Program Building located by the gardens.
Time and Dates:
1:30 -3:30 pm on Wednesdays (10/5, 10/12, 10/19). Rain Date: 10/26.

WINTER PREPARATION: Methods employed by insects, mammals, birds, and reptiles
Dwindling daylight and cooling temperatures trigger humans to dig out hats, gloves, and heavy coats. Other animals including insects, mammals, birds, and reptiles take these environmental queues and prepare in remarkable ways to survive winter. Join an inquisitive group of adults as we wander Five Rivers and wonder about its inhabitants’ preparations. Photographs, guide books, skulls, pelts, and other materials will help enlighten us as we discuss the focused, quiet activity all around us. Who knows? It might just trigger us to be more proactive in our own preparations for winter!
Time and Dates:
10:00 – 11:30 pm on Thursdays (11/3, 11/10, 11/17). Rain Date: 12/1.
