​Five Rivers
BIO BLITZ

Help us celebrate Five Rivers’ biodiversity by taking part in a BioBlitz. Our goal is to take inventory of the species of plants, animals, and insects that live at Five Rivers. From June 3-10 you can participate by submitting your observations online via iNaturalist or by joining an organized BioBlitz events. Five Rivers will be hosting themed activities for all ages to enjoy throughout the week so the whole family can get involved.

 

 

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

SATURDAY, JUNE 3
8:00 am: Morning Bird Walk – Join us for an early morning walk to see and hear what birds we have at Five Rivers, with the help of an expert birder. Beginners are welcome. Bring binoculars if you have them, but we will also have binoculars available to borrow. The walk will last roughly two hours, but feel free to turn back at any time. Meet outside the visitor center at 8:00 am.

10:30 am: iNaturalist for Community Science: An Orientation – What is iNaturalist? iNaturalist is a free downloadable app that can be used to identify observations and report them to an international community science database. This orientation will be an introduction to this useful app, and how you can use it to report findings for the Five Rivers BioBlitz! Bring your phone and meet in the Visitor Center at 10:30 am.

1:00 pm Insect Netting – Explore the world of insects! Join us for a few hours spent catching, identifying, and releasing insects. We will use magnifying lenses to learn about critters up close, and we can report our findings to iNaturalist. Beginners are welcome. Netting will take place from 1:00-3:00 pm.

SUNDAY, JUNE 4
10:00 am: Seeking Animals and Their Sign – Animals leave signs of their presence everywhere – we just have to look for them! Come along on a walk to find animal tracks, scat, nests, and other signs of animal activity at Five Rivers! Meet at the Visitor Center at 10:00 am. The walk will last roughly two hours, but feel free to turn back at any time.

1:00 pm: Plant Diversity Walk – Spring is here! Come along with us as we see what plants we have blooming and sprouting here at Five Rivers. Talented botanists will lead us around our trails to record what native plant species are growing. Meet at the Visitor Center at 1:00 pm. The walk will last roughly two hours, but feel free to turn back at any time.

TUESDAY, JUNE 6
8:00 pm: Bat Night – Come See Little Brown Bats! This is the first week of a citizen science project where volunteers count bats as they emerge for their evening flights at Five Rivers. Meet at the Visitor Center at 8:00 pm. From there, we will set off on the trail to the bat count site and the program will be over by 9:30 PM. Please feel free to leave at any time on this late night!

THURSDAY, JUNE 8
Outdoors After School: BioBlitz Day! Join us after school to get some fresh air, stretch your legs, and collect data for the BioBlitz! We’ll meet in front of the Visitor Center at 4:30 PM and head out on an adventure as citizen scientists to find animal signs and animals themselves. For children K-5 and their caregivers.

FRIDAY, JUNE 9
8:00 pm: Moth Night – Did you know there are 439 types of moths found in New York State, yet only 64 butterflies? Come meet some of our beautiful and mysteries moth neighbors up close. We will use sheets and flashlights to attract moths and identify them with the help of an entomologist. Meet at the Visitor Center.

SATURDAY, JUNE 10
8:00 am: Morning Bird Walk – Join us for an early morning walk to see and hear what birds we have at Five Rivers, with the help of expert birders. Meet outside the Visitor Center at 8:00 am. There will be a brief introduction, and then we will hit the trails. Bring binoculars if you have them, but we will also have binoculars available to borrow. The walk will last roughly two hours, but feel free to turn back at any time.  Maximum of 20 participants for this activity, so don’t delay… sign up today!
